With experience in the metrology and scanning industry spanning over 20 years, Physical Digital® Founder and Managing Director Tim Rapley started the business to offer high-accuracy 3D measurement services to a vast array of industries, having earlier introduced the UK’s first GOM scanning system during his ten-year career at McLaren.
Physical Digital first launched back in 2005 and Tim opened the first measurement facility in Woking, Surrey, where the team continued to grow. With the increase in demand and ever-advancing technologies, the company heavily invested in the latest equipment and purchased an ATOS Scanbox 5120 to offer the UK’s first service-based automated batch measurement solution. The Scanbox was initially located at their Midlands satellite site, where the team provided automated 3D scanning to some of the UK’s largest Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM’s).
Evolution of Physical Digital
In September 2017, Physical Digital relocated the entire team and the ATOS Scanbox to a much larger facility in Guildford, Surrey. The increased space has allowed the company to build a dedicated environmentally-controlled measurement cell, as well as invest in more high-end scanning systems and equipment, increasing flexibility and service offering to their clients.
Today, Physical Digital are the world’s first company to have be accredited to Nadcap standards for their measurement and inspection services using 3D Structured Light (3DSL).
The team’s dedication to provide an exemplary level of service whilst delivering the UK’s highest accuracy measurement data, with full traceability, has resulted in the continued supply of 3D Structured Light measurement services to many world-renowned organisations across a wide variety of industry sectors including, Aerospace, Industrial Gas Turbines, Automotive, Oil and Gas as well as consumer and retails markets.
Providing exceptional high-accuracy services
Physical Digital’s rapidly-expanding team of engineers specialise in high-resolution non-contact optical measurement solutions using 3DSL, providing a fast, accurate and cost-effective way of collecting physical detailed data. The company’s 3D scanning and quality inspection services enables engineers to analysis products, make design improvements, reduce prototyping errors, guarantee quality and consistency in production. The team of in-house design engineers offer a full design and reverse engineering service meaning that Physical Digital can support your business with a complete end to end solution, from 3D measurement through to reverse engineering design, re-manufacture and quality control.
World’s first Nadcap accreditation
Physical Digital proudly announced on World Metrology Day 2019, that they are the World’s first company to have been awarded a Nadcap accreditation for measurement and inspection using 3D Structured Light. A Nadcap accreditation is the recognition of excellence in a specialised field by the consensus of leading Aerospace companies. For 3D Structured Light-based measurement, it is the most comprehensive set of quality criteria with which all scanning companies should be judged. If you’re in any regulated industry, you’ll understand the importance for having rigorous safety and quality standards in place. For aerospace manufacturers Nadcap provides the gold standard for control of special processes.
Physical Digital are also very proud to be accredited and certified for their Quality Management System by both Nadcap for AC7004 and BSI, a UKAS accredited body, for ISO 9001:2015. The team have also been awarded Safecontractor status, providing our customers with the reassurance that we follow excellent health and safety practises both out on site and at our facility in Surrey.
