Dragon3D were commissioned by AF Rayspeed to provide measurement and reverse engineering services in order to aid the design modifications and reproduction of a legacy component for the Lambretta Scooter.
Restoring and refining a classic
AF Rayspeed Ltd, a family run business based in Yorkshire, are resellers of restored Lambretta Scooters. They also provide servicing, repair and full customisation and focus a lot of efforts in to improving the performance of the Lambretta’s, both of their engines and their handling. Part of this service includes working with customers on bespoke projects, resulting in the development of new and improved parts, often replacing parts that are no longer available. AF Rayspeed contacted Physical Digital about a recent customer project they had undertaken to redesign the original Lambretta disc brake.
Ben Kemp from AF Rayspeed wanted to have an accurate scan that could be imported into CAD to verify measurements and to use as base model to make much needed improvements, whilst maintaining the iconic aesthetics of the original design.
The measurement process
Our Engineers were provided with a sample Lambretta brake disc for measurement.
Dragon3Dl uses the industry-leading GOM ATOS measurement systems to capture the most accurate and high-resolution data as possible. AF Rayspeed had independently researched the UK market-place for effective measurement solutions and identified the
GOM systems as being the most accurate and useable data. The GOM 3D structured light scanning system works with stereoscopic cameras capturing a projected fringe pattern to generate surface data of the disc break, providing extremely high-resolution data for small-scale projects. The GOM software is used to complete the scanning, alignment and inspection process meaning that traceability is maintained throughout the project, therefore our client could have full confidence in the accuracy of the data provided for their project.
